Children Reading to Therapy Animals
I worked for HABRI (The Human Animal Bond Research Initiative) creating short videos from 2013-2014. I was director of the video. I had a team of 4 film students and fantastic support from the Caring Paws handlers, as well as parents and children involved in the Reader Dogs program.
ICAN - Indiana Canine Assistant Network
I was producer and interviewer for the ICAN piece.
The ICAN staff work hard to help those incarcerated develop meaningful lives while in prison. The program teaches inmates how to become a dog handler and train service dogs. Inmates are then able to train dogs while in prison. After their service dog has been trained, it has a “graduation day” and moves on to its new home to help serve someone in need.
It was a special honor to interview Deb Cole, a former inmate handler, who was released from prison. Because of her experience with ICAN, she was able to get a job training dogs. Most prisoners have a hard time getting hired after serving a sentence. ICAN helps give them a skill and a work reference to put on job applications.
Aquariums in Alzheimer’s Care Facilities
I was cinematographer for the Alzheimer’s piece.
Having aquariums near Alzheimer’s patients helped keep the patients calm. This also meant Alzheimer's patients were able to remain calmer during meal times, improving nutrition. HABRI is continuing to research this response. Improving the conditions for patients suffering from Alzheimer’s is extremely worthwhile. I hope aquariums are added to more nursing homes in the near future.
